Jam

3 Percussionists. For line upon line percussion.

Jam is my pandemic-era-stuck-in-my-apartment-social-distancing piece. The electric drum set connected to headphone, lampshades, and hand percussion are all items that one would find in an apartment, where, especially for a percussionist, space is tight and one needs to be quiet for their neighbors. The piece also uses samples from the song “Claws”, a pandemic-era love song by Charli XCX (and happened to be my spotify-wrapped top song of 2021). The 3 members of line upon line percussion perform a large electronic instrument, where a drums set is connected to a sampler and a vocoder. The music begins constrained and covered, but full of pent up energy. There is a breaking point, where the percussionist at first peek through, and then suddenly explode out of these constraints for a brief, loud “jamming out”, with loud drums, a backing track, party lights, tambourine and cowbell.

Matt Teodori, Adam Bedell, and Cullen Faulk are the Austin-based trio line upon line percussion.
